I’m always looking for free sewing patterns to share with people on my email list (join here for 1 free pattern every Thursday!).

Here are the best printable sewing patterns I’ve found for kids. These are modern and on-trend designs.

For this post I focused on clothes, hats, and accessories. The sizes include babies, toddlers, young kids, and tweens.

  • Fabric requirements: 3/8 to 1/2 yard (0.4m – 0.45m) of stretchy knit fabric. This fabric estimate is based on 60″ fabric. Choose light or medium weight fabric.

  • Fabric requirements: the designer recommends “light to medium [weight] jersey knits with at least 25% stretch (lycra or elastane). For neckband: Rib knit fabric or jersey lycra.”

  • Fabric requirements: 0.5 – 0.7 yards (0.45m – 0.7m) of medium weight knit fabric, for example jersey or french terry. 0.13 yards (0.1m) of ribbing. The designer suggests “1×1 rib knit or cotton/lycra jersey for light to medium weight fabrics and a 2×1 rib knit for heavy weight fabrics”

Note: there are some complaints in the comments about the seam allowance ‘tabs’ being hard to fold and sew. I had the same problem when I used this pattern. If you have this issue too, try cutting off the ‘tabs’.

  • Design: Loose A-line style. Contrasting yoke. Shoulder ties made from bias binding. Optional ric rac or trim at the front. It’s knee-length; approx. 17″ – 28″ long, depending on what size you make.
  • Fabric requirements: 1 – 1.5 yards (0.9m – 1.4m). Light to medium weight woven fabric. For example, quilting cotton, batiste, lawn, broadcloth, chambray, seersucker, and linen.
  • File format: print-at-home PDF.
  • Instructions included? the pattern includes printable sewing instructions with illustrations. This blog post has step-by-step photo instructions.
  • Is this project for beginners? if you buy the bias binding tape, then yes. Making your own bias tape is quite an involved process.

This headband tutorial and pattern is based on professionally-made ones. I bought and took apart 2 twist headbands to figure this out. Now you can copy how many stores make headbands for a fraction of the price!

  • Sizes: 8 sizes for 1-year-old toddlers to XL adults.
  • Design: a twisted knot in the middle. Elastic at the back. It’s not very wide and the twisted knot is small and subtle.
  • Fabric requirements: lightweight stretchy knit fabric. For example, cotton single jersey, viscose jersey, polyester interlock jersey, etc.
  • File format: print-at-home PDF.
  • Is this project for beginners? I think it’s a good first project for stretch fabrics.
