**One Free Sewing Pattern. Every Thursday. Join the Email List ๐**
I designed this free sleep mask pattern (download here) to be easy for beginners to sew.
This is an extra soft, oversized style mask. It will cover most of your forehead and nose.
This small sewing project is perfect for:
- Scrap fabrics!
- DIY gifts for family and friends. Iโd make a matching scrunchie, fabric gift bag, and buy a few chocolates to make this a cute gift package.
- Replace your old, tired sleep mask (mine was a cheap-looking one from an airport).
- Practice new sewing skills on a small project โ this is perfect for beginners.

How to DIY a sleep mask
Video sewing tutorial:
Hereโs how to make a sleep mask in 7 steps (brief overview):
- Iron fusible interfacing onto your fabric. Cut out your 2 sleep mask pieces.
- Sew each mask piece to some cotton batting.
- (Optional) make the casing for the elastic.
- Sew the 2 mask pieces together, right sides facing each other. The elastic should be sandwiched in between. Leave a 2โณ gap at the top.
- Trim the seam allowance.
- Turn the mask inside out.
- Close the gap: topstitch by machine or hand stitch.
The process is slightly different for silk. I will create a separate blog post on how to DIY a silk sleep mask.

Other measurements you’ll need:
Elastic length: 12.5″ – 13.5″ (if in doubt, go for the smaller length).
Fabric strip for the casing: 2.5″ width X double your elastic length (so 25″ – 27″ length).
